How have Fibonacci numbers got turned into DNA codes? Light plays a fundamental role in the life of plants. Three groups of photomorphogenic photoreceptors have been identified in plants and there is evidence that they have an internal clock. It does not seem unlikely that, with their sensitivities to different parts of the spectrum, plants have evolved to perceive angles and to possess an aiming system for the primordia.

42.5° is the angle [roughly] at which light is scattered in the upper atmosphere producing a blue sky. It is also the angle supplementary to 137.5° [Fig 1], which is the divergence angle [roughly] at which plants best exhibit numbers of the Fibonacci series.

Hemp, exhibiting two phyllotaxies [Figs 5 and 6], provides an answer. The increase in elements exposed to the light has been achieved by having 3 branches rather than 2. The regularity of the arrangement in Fig 6, and the obtuse divergence angle, suggest its origin in mutual repulsion of the primordia: then, as in the decussate example in Fig 5, the employment of oppositeness to double the exposure.
